Ingredients
  

  • 4 cups diced apples
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • cup brown sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp nutmeg
  • 1 cup butter softened
  • 1 ½ cups sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 ¾ cups flour
  • 2 tsp cream of tartar
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 3 tbsp sugar + 1 tsp cinnamon for topping

Method
 

  1. Cook apples with butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg until soft. Set aside.
  2. Cream butter and sugar, then beat in eggs and vanilla.
  3. Whisk flour, cream of tartar, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon. Mix into wet ingredients to form dough.
  4. Press half the dough into a lined 9x13 pan. Spread apple filling on top. Drop and spread remaining dough over filling.
  5. Sprinkle with cinnamon-sugar topping.
  6. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 35–40 minutes. Cool before slicing.

Notes

  • Use tart apples like Granny Smith for the best flavor balance.
  • Add chopped pecans or walnuts for crunch.
  • Double the cinnamon-sugar topping for an extra sweet crust.
